![]() ![]() Despite losing weight, Kadie is convinced that when Alejandro arrives in Yorkshire from Mexico, he will take one look at her, feel like he has been duped and hop straight back on a flight home. Shaun and Christine (Photo: Discovery +/James Rudland) ![]() The participants are (nearly) all likeable, and it’s hard not to root for their relationships despite the (pretty high) hurdles. But there’s another option this iteration of 90 Day Fiancé has an unexpected innocence and an undeniable sweetness. Our worst instincts want to question their authenticity and, worse, ridicule their apparent stupidity at falling in love with someone who could be taking them for a ride. Bridie isn’t a fan of the relaxed Lebanese approach to social plans and gets upset when Host’s friends arrive at their dinner table, while Alejandro thinks the UK is “depressing” thanks to the cold weather, something that puts a spanner in Kadie’s plans to get him to move to Yorkshire.Īs in shows like Married at First Sight and Too Hot to Handle, it’s all too easy to be cynical about these relationships. Other times, it’s simply down to clashing cultures. Sometimes it’s an age difference – the 40-year gap between Pat, 68, and Sam, 28, raises eyebrows. Sometimes it comes down to money – Shaun sends a huge chunk of his paycheck to support Christine and her family every month. We watch as they meet and face the obstacles that they’ve been avoiding dealing with until now. As well as Shaun and Christine, there’s Kadie (Yorkshire) and Alejandro (Mexico), Bridie (Rotherham) and Host (Lebanon), Victoria (Wolverhampton) and Sean (Japan), Richard (Preston) and Kathleen (The Philippines), Emma (Yorkshire) and Hossein (Iran), Pat (Merseyside) and Sam (Pakistan), and Calum (Perth) and Marvin (The Seychelles). Instead, it takes on a documentary feel, following relationships which traverse cultures as well as long distances. The British version is much gentler, largely due to the difference in visas which removes the pressure of a 90-day wedding deadline. Over the 90 days, we watch as they get to know each other (sometimes it’s the first time they’ve met face-to-face) and, more often than not, wrestle with the reality of a person who is not what they expected. It’s the US’s most ridiculous dating show, often explosive, sometimes morally questionable and always entertaining: the series – which began in 2014 on US channel TLC – follows couples in long distance relationships who have applied for a K-1 visa which allows the non-US citizen to live in the country for 90 days before marrying their partner. They are one of eight couples participating in the new British iteration of 90 Day Fiancé, a dating reality series imported from America and launching in the UK this Sunday (24 July) on Discovery+. There’s just one small caveat to their love story… Christine lives in The Philippines. They met in 2012 and have a baby together, four-year-old Christian, and Shaun acts as a loving stepfather to Christine’s three children from a previous marriage. He’s a cleaning manager at a supermarket and completely, utterly in love with Christine.
